Breast Cancer Awareness

While most people relate the month of October to Halloween, it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. Every October, people from all over the world show their support and advocate the importance of screenings for everyone. People can show their awareness by simply wearing the color pink. At Nazareth Academy, the Cancer Awareness Club handed out pink ribbons and there were pink shirts created to show support. The volleyball and soccer teams at school had pink-out games to show their support as well. Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women. Each year, about 264,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,400 in men. As a result, about 42,000 women and 500 men in the U.S. die each year from this disease. There are also several different types of breast cancer such as invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. Although aging and genetic mutations are inevitable, certain activities such as keeping a healthy weight, staying physically active, and reducing alcohol intake can decrease the chances of breast cancer. Breast cancer screening is extremely important since it can help discover abnormalities or find cancer earlier. Moreover, doctors perform regular mammograms, and an X-ray picture of the breast, so they can find breast cancer early. Even though breast cancer in men is extremely rare, it still happens. Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrates the survivors of breast cancer and honors those who have died from it.
