When Joseph R. Biden Jr. took office on Wednesday, January 20th, he became the oldest person ever sworn in as president. Biden turned 78 in November. US President Joe Biden is the 15th American vice president to return to the White House as commander-in-chief and the first in 27 years, after George H.W. Bush in 1989.
When Kamala Harris took office on Wednesday, January 20, she became the first-ever female vice-president. She also became the first-ever vice president of Jamaican and of Indian descent. Harris has a big opportunity to help America confront some of its biggest issues. Her multiracial identity will hopefully force America too, if not confront the racism that’s at the foundation of its division, then at least stretch the public’s understanding of race. Her identity as a woman will unlock possibilities for other women across the country and help young minds imagine new dreams.
