If someone were to ask what the fastest-growing team at Nazareth was, many would most likely assume soccer or volleyball. However, the Nazareth Golf team consists of sixteen girls this season, that’s quite a few compared to the team of five this past year. One of the biggest reasons for this surge of popularity is Coach Steve Wiercinski. With a larger team, more practice and training are required. The team is lucky enough to have the time to get to know Mr. Wiercinski, the sport, and how he’s managing such a large group of girls.
Every morning, Coach Steve wakes up at 2:45 a.m. and works a shift as a corrections officer from four to noon. Later in his day, he comes to Nazareth to coach either a practice or a match. When he’s not working or golfing, Mr. Wiercinski enjoys traveling, fishing, and cooking. He started at Nazareth as a security guard and then was offered the position of the Nazareth golf coach. He has been the coach for six years and hopes to continue. When asked why he enjoys the game so much, his answer was simple. He believes it is a game you can play all your life, you can play with anyone, and everyone can play equally.
The golf season is short, so it is a very busy few weeks. Although Coach wishes the season was longer, he always makes sure the girls get in enough practice. Whether they go to The Mad Golfer or Snipes Chip and Putt, Coach always has the patience and understanding needed to be the best coach out there. Mr. Wiercinski’s advice for anyone thinking about trying golf is to find your local PGA professional and take some lessons. They are never very expensive and always a smart investment. In conclusion, Coach’s goal for the team is to have fun and appreciate the game of golf. In his own words, “I’m glad I have the opportunity to share the game with the best girls in the world.”
